Australian Native Trees
Many native trees being used in landscape projects and streetscape throughout Australia. Bottle Tree, Grass Tree, Wattle, Acacia, Lilli Pilli, Willow Myrtle, Banksia, Flame Tree etc.
Out of which Queensland Bottle Tree and Grass Trees are very unique, attractive unusual trees which you could find only in Australia.
Brachychiton Rupestris, commonly known as the narrow-leaved bottle tree or Queensland bottle tree, is a tree in the family Malvaceae native to Queensland, Australia. This is a small to medium sized tree with a characteristic bulbous trunk which gives rise to the common ‘bottle tree’ name. Leaves are about 100 mm long and may have entire margins or be deeply lobed. The bell-shaped flowers are followed by seed capsules which contain many large seeds.
Xanthorrhoea (Grass Tree) is a genus of about 30 species of flowering plants endemic to Australia. Due to its shape, this tree is popular as “Black Boy”. This ancient tree was well connected to first Australians. Grass trees were a ‘staple’ plant for the aborigines, providing food, drink, fibre and materials for making implements and weapons. All varieties of Grass trees are classified as Protected. It is now illegal to dig up wild plants anywhere without a licence. Xanthorrhoea johnsonii, Xanthorrhoea Glauca, Xanthorrhoea Australis and Xanthorrhoea preissii species very popular in high end landscape projects in Australia.
“Johnsonii” (Queensland Grass Tree) naturally found in Queensland to north east NSW. Fine leaves with smooth trunk.
“Glauca” variety found in South East coast of Australia mainly NSW. This is the only Grass Tree with the much sought after thick, blue-grey foliage which makes it a standout amongst all Grass Trees.
“Australis” species is commonly called the Austral Grass Tree, Common or Southern Grass Tree. And it is probably the most widely found of all of the grass trees.
“Preissii” is native to Western Australia.
Note: Queensland Bottle Tree and few varieties of Grass Trees have been planted in back and front yards of the Maple Villa premises for guests’ observation.
